Sex, Desire and Intersectionality

In this panel, writer/director Shonali Bose, actress Kalki Koechlin and civil rights activist Malini Chib will discuss the story and history of the film Margarita with a Straw which brought them all together.

Born in Kolkata, Shonali Bose has an MA in Political Science from Columbia University and an MFA in Directing from the UCLA Film School.

Bose lives between Los Angeles and Mumbai and is most proud of being the mother of her two sons – Ishan and Vivan.

She has written and directed three feature narrative films – Amu, Margarita with a Straw and The Sky is Pink. All three films had critically acclaimed theatrical releases in India and North America amongst many other countries and won major international awards (including at Sundance and TIFF). All three premiered in TIFF (Amu world premiere was Berlin followed by TIFF). The Sky is Pink starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Farhan Akhtar was the only Asian film in the Gala section at TIFF.

Shonali was commissioned by Anonymous Content and Paramount Pictures to write the pilot and bible for a global series, based on a book – Delhi Riche. Netflix greenlit the series based on her work. Due to budget differences the project did not happen.

She is currently in development on several feature films and web series in both the US and India.
